Information

Enclosed helmet

This helmet type is depicted in several manuscripts from the early 1200's until ca. 1240. The enclosed helmet was carried over a hood of padding, as well as a chainmail coif and often with a smaller skullcap inside. It probably developed from a flat-topped variant of the nasal helmet as the need for greater face protection is increased with the cavalry spears' transition to being a weapon of thrusting.
