Information
Coat of plate (segmented armor)
The coat of plate is a torso protection consisting of steel plates
riveted on the inside of a fabric or leather suit. To use plates underneath
a chainmail hauberk is known from English knight tournaments around
1180. From the middle of the 13th century, the segmented coat of plate,
which is worn outside the chainmail hauberk, has spread to most of
Europe.
The number of plates varies from 8-10 plates to hundreds. Overlapping
of the plates is developed so that they do not impede movement while
providing full coverage.
For the knights, coat of plate develops into real plate and brigandine
armor in the 14th century, but it is still used subsequently by infantry
soldiers and militias.
