Information

Round shield (concave-shaped shield)

Round concave-shaped shields are widely used throughout the Middle Ages. They are known from the Franconian manuscripts of the 900s, and up to the end of the Middle Ages.
The heraldry of the shield comes from a fresco, in an Italian templar church. Later heraldry of the mendicant orders uses the same kind of symbolism. The top field is symbolizing the color of the order's cloak, the bottom field symbolizing the color of the tunic under the cloak.
