Information
Triangular shield
The triangular shield develops at the end of the 1100's from the
former almond-shaped shield. Triangular shields were more manageable
and could be used either by horse or on foot. Unfortunately, not many
traditions about the use of such shields with melee weapons have survived.
The triangular shield has a fairly high surface area; it provided
good protection and could be used for depiction of heraldry or coat
of arms. The disadvantage is that the legs are left unprotected; this
is remedied with more and better armor.
The shield's heraldry originates from a 1300s painting, on the shield
of the Teutonic Grandmaster Karl von Trier.
